My Spotify was playing music on random. I was in the zone, writing my heart out and getting some great marketing content completed. And then I stopped dead in my tracks, the writing stopped, and I listened. The song, “Little Things” started playing. I had never heard this song before, but there was something about it that struck a chord. If you haven’t heard it, you can check it out here. The song talks about making big things out of little things, and something in that statement made me want to write this blog.

I have always been the type of person who is very focused on details. As a marketing professional, it is super important for me to make sure every detail is planned. From hotel arrangements to email images to website colors, focusing on the microscopic details is what sets one company apart from another. The advice I always give to younger adults is to focus on the little things, the little details. Whether you are in marketing or a teacher or someone in the trades, the little details is what matters to people.

Then I thought of my personal life and saw the same pattern. I focus on little details with friends, my husband, my kid and my family. I always want them to feel like they are important, like I am really listening when they talk to me, and that I remember the little things – because if they talked to me about it, it obviously was important to them. Like most people, I would want the people close to me to remember the little things.

So the song ended and I just sat there. I opened a word document and started writing. I started writing feelings that I have had about people not remembering the little things. I wrote about when people in my life, both professionally and personally, remembered the little things and how I felt. I started writing the little things – the little things that matter to me, that are actually big things in my life. It was one of the most soothing exercises I have had in a long time.

My challenge for you today is to recognize the little things. The little things that are big things, that matter. Also to focus on the little things…in your conversations with friends or family or co-workers, focus on what the little things are and remember them. You never know when it will make someone’s day.
